Problem Statement: A staggering 10 million weddings take place in India every year and the wedding industry is growing at 25-30% annually. In theory we know that waste would be a logical byproduct of weddings, but the actual numbers are shocking. The three biggest sources of waste in an Indian wedding—food, flowers and gifts. An average Indian wedding produces a massive 650 pounds of plastic and floral waste, 450 pounds of food waste, and 63 tons of carbon emissions. This adversely impacts the environment.
Design Challenge: How might we use design thinking to educate and assist the community in minimizing and correctly disposing the waste generated in a wedding?
Design Outcome: Badhai (Congrats) is an interactive online platform that educates and assists the users between 20 to 35 years in minimizing and properly disposing of the waste generated at an Indian wedding. It is an online platform that helps the user learn and, connect to vendors and businesses to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Through this platform, I want people to start viewing weddings as celebrations that are in harmony with nature. It aims to energize, engage and inspire people to reconnect with their roots. It is an eco-friendly event and wedding company that can guide its user with conscious and unique ways to reduce and manage waste without sacrificing style or spending more.
